A Few Of Our Favourite Things

A Few Of Our Favourite Things
Penzance
Sunny south-facing Penzance lies in the shores of Mount's Bay in the far west of Cornwall. Mount's Bay itself is an inspirational setting. It is the largest bay in Britain and its magnificent shoreline runs in an arc from Land's End in the west to Lizard Point in the south. At the inner corner of the bay, east of Penzance, is the ancient town of Marazion and the offshore St Michael's Mount, a castle-crowned island that has been strategic importance since the Bronze Age. Between Penzance and Marazion lies a long sweep of safe and accessible sandy beach lapped by a warm, crystal-clear sea. Offshore are some of the best sailing and windsurfing waters in Europe.

St Michael's Mount

In 1954 Francis St Aubyn, the 3rd Lord St levan, gave St Michael’s Mount and a large endowment fund to the National Trust, retaining a 999-year lease for the family to live in the castle. While the National Trust now ensures the preservation and conservation of the Mount, the St Aubyn family continue to live on and manage the island as they have done since the 17th century.
In its heyday as a busy port, the island population swelled to three hundred. Today visitors come and go and the seafront cottages are home to more than thirty islanders.
The Island Cafe, Sail Loft Restaurant, Island Shop and NT Shop are open the same time as the castle. All island visitors are welcomed to the harbour, village and the cafe/restaurant, regardless of whether they pay for castle or garden admission.
